Wally’s Story

The Wise Black Cat Behind Wednesday Wisdom

I once had a beautiful tabby cat named Molly. Her back legs were paralysed, so she was a fully indoor cat with her own room. A couple of other cats would spend time with her, but she never truly fitted in with them. I began to feel she needed a companion of her own.

I asked my vet at the time — the wonderful Dr. Cat in Chennai — if he ever came across a special needs cat in need of a home. I told him I would love to find a friend for Molly.

A couple of weeks later, he contacted me about a young black cat who was in foster care. His carer was about to return to her native place and needed to find him a permanent home.

When I went to meet him, it was love at first sight.

Finally, a black cat 🖤

I had always wanted a black cat, but I never seemed to come across one during my rescue work. And I never wanted to actively “shop around” for one — I’ve always felt cats find me when the time is right.

So Wally, the beautiful black cat, found his way into my life.

He was about six months old at the time, but his early days had been incredibly tough. As a tiny kitten, he had lived on a garbage site where severe malnutrition prevented his muscles from developing properly. Thankfully, someone rescued him and gave him the love and care he so desperately needed.

When Wally first came to me, he couldn’t walk properly. Over time he improved greatly, but even now he still has a little wobble to his step. He doesn’t really jump onto high surfaces — instead, he uses ramps or lower ledges to get around.

Molly’s Dear Friend

Despite his challenges, Wally was a wonderful companion for Molly. He loved her dearly. While he could be a little distant with humans, he came alive in the company of another cat.

When Molly passed away, Wally was quite lost. He missed her terribly. But not long after, another soul entered his life — a tiny kitten named Bertie, who had been cruelly thrown away in a carrier bag along with his two siblings. Sadly, only Bertie survived, but in time he became Wally’s new best friend.

At first, Wally was indifferent to this curious little kitten. But as Bertie grew braver and more playful, a beautiful friendship blossomed between them.

Wally Today

Now 10 years old, Wally is a beloved member of our family. He still carries a quiet, thoughtful energy with him — as though he sees the world a little differently from other cats. He doesn’t trust easily, but when he does, his bond is unbreakable.

There has always been a special kind of wisdom in Wally. It’s as if he thinks deeply before he acts, reminding us that even through hardship, there is strength, resilience, and love.

And that’s how Wally became the voice behind Wednesday Wisdom. Each week, through his words, he continues to share those gentle lessons with us all.
